Experiential Prayer 1: Head Gong

Try this amazing sound experiment of a gong inside your head using a coat hanger and some cotton. You will never have heard anything like it and it’ll never ring the same way twice. And it won’t annoy anyone else as no sound is created outside of your head.

In temples and monasteries gongs and bells are used to remind those listening to be mindful; to bring their attention to the present moment (smiley habit four). The special acoustic resonance of a gong also illustrates the underlying stillness (smiley habit three) from which all activity and all sound comes.

Create this astounding internal prayer gong and use it to bring you to stillness. As its ring diminishes and eventually returns to stillness – so let your mind return to stillness from the noise of everyday life. Try and focus on the moment the sound finally stills.

  1. To make this get hold of a sturdy wire coat hanger and some cotton. Tie the cotton to either end of the coat hanger, see figure i, with a loop at the end for your little finger to go in.
  2. Thread the loops over your little fingers. The coat hanger should hang down from your little fingers with your palms facing towards you. See figure ii.
  3. Lean forward so that you can put your little fingers in your ears with the coat hanger swinging freely below. Now find a firm surface to knock the coat hanger against or ask a friend to tap it for you with something metallic and the gong will ring inside your head.

NB: This is also great at parties.
