Deserts are metaphorically rich with parallels to our own spiritual journeys. We speak of being ‘dry’ or ‘in the wilderness’ or ‘lost’ or ‘in need of refreshment’. Much spirituality, especially the Abrahamic religions were formed in the desert and we can benefit a great deal from exploring the parallels to our own internal environments.
One great teacher, Jesus grew up in the desert and later withdrew to the lonely places of the desert wilderness for the renewing that is only available in that isolation. My favourite teaching was his line to his followers promising that there would be streams of living water endlessly flowing from within them. If you knew how hard it was to get a drink this would mean a lot to you.
