You Fool. Tonight You Will Die.

I've spent this week editing the self shot video diary of Jim Janknegt – who undertook a commission from one of the websites I edit to paint his interpretation of the parable of the rich fool. My week started with NTSC technical difficulties but ended with deep affection for a middle aged American painter and his menagerie.

One of the sections of rejesus.co.uk I look after is the expressions section. In the past we’ve commissioned Lizzie Everard to undertake a creative brief for us and document her progress. Last year we asked Jude Simpson to do the same and now it is the turn of US painter Jim Janknegt. He has a wonderful folio of modern naive icons of gospel stories.

It has been a while since I’ve edited some video and it’s one of those things I need to give my full focus to. The bit I inevitably end up loving is constructing a message from five times as much footage. What results from that process is a deep familiarity with the person being filmed and their message.
